The Periyar Lake of Ral is the most well-maintained lake in India. This man-made lake is spread over 24 square kilometers. This lake came into existence due to the dam built on the Periyar River. Providing electricity and water to the area near Tamil Nadu, it opens up a treasure of amazing beauty for the tourists. Small hills are full of trees all around and the clouds hovering over them make different kinds of pictures. At the time when the dam water was released at this place, only precious trees were removed. Now the black-stub remains of the remaining trees, which have become its identity. Wild buffalo, gaur, bear etc. are also found in abundance in other wildlife here. At least two thousand species of birds are found around Periyar.

The habitat of around 320 bird species and 45 different types of reptiles make it an indispensable sanctuary in the country.
