Rupnagar tourist places are famous for Gurudwara sahib, dam, Morinda, and Nangal. Rupnagar city also has the status of district center with the formation of Rupnagar District on 1st Nov 1966. Situated on the bank of river Satluj, the Sirhind canal passes through the heart of the city.

It was formerly known as Ropar.  The town of Rupnagar occupies a prominent place in ancient and medieval history and has an importance in modern history too. Recent excavations suggest that Rupnagar was one of the oldest towns in Punjab. The relics excavated from a mound, known as Nalagarh Tibbi near the Government College reveal that the town had flourished in the past with a very advanced civilization similar to Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro Civilization.

Rupnagar district is located at a distance of 41 km from Chandigarh. Passenger and goods transport facilities are available in all the towns of the district except Kharar, Chamkaur Sahib and SAS Nagar fall on the railway line. The Satluj River passes close (2 to 5 km) to the towns of Nangal, Naya Nangal, Rupnagar, and Anandpur Sahib. The city has many worth seeing sites in and around it, such as Head Works, Pin cassia Boat Club, Treaty Place of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and Lord William Ben tick, Site of Indus Valley Civilization, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Bagh, Gurudwara Bhatha Sahib, and Gurudwara Sadabarat.

Anandpur Sahib, Rupnagar tourist places

On the left bank of the Sutlej river, 40 kilometers from Rupnagar town, is situated Anandpur Sahib, the “abode of bliss”. In the background is the Naina Devi range. Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, founded the town of Anandpur Sahib. The Guru had left Baba Bakala in the Amritsar district and purchased the land from the Raja of Bilaspur.

It was also at Anandpur Sahib that Kashmiri Pandits approached the ninth Guru to save them from Mughals’ tyranny. Acceding their request on the motivation of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji left for Delhi to make Supreme Sacrifice. At Anandpur Sahib, the Great tenth Guru of Sikhs Guru Gobind Singh Ji spent his early age. It was here that great Guru mastered the use of arms in Kila Anandgarh Sahib. The Holla Mohalla of Anandpur Sahib is an outstanding festival of the Sikhs, which is celebrated with great pomp and show on the day following the Holi festival. Guru Gobind Singh came to this town in 1674 when he was only eight years old and he spent about 25 years, the major part of his life in Anandpur Sahib.

The town became the rallying point of his struggle against Mughal oppression and the surrounding areas, were scenes of many a battle. It was here that the Guru introduced a new form of baptism and called baptized Sikhs ‘Khalsa’ or the pure ones, giving them the common surname Singh (lion). The town has a number of Gurudwaras like Gurudwara Keshgarh Sahib, Gurudwara Manji Sahib, Gurudwara Sis Ganj, Gurudwara Bhora Sahib, Gurudwara Anandgarh Sahib, and Gurudwara Mai Jito associated with the ninth and tenth Gurus of the Sikhs.

The famous Sri Dashmesh Academy and Guru Teg Bahadur Museum are also situated at Anandpur Sahib. It is worth mentioning that the Birth Tercentenary of Khalsa was celebrated during April 1999 at Anandpur Sahib in which important dignitaries from all walks of life from all over the world including Vice President of India, Prime Minister of India, and various other political and religious leaders participated. Anandpur Sahib, the birthplace of Khalsa has also been developed as a tourist center. It has also been made “White City”.

Archaeological Museum , Rupnagar tourist places

This museum is very old but the building was maintained properly.  This museum store a wide range of historic pieces mostly collected before the independence. The Museum is maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. It has a collection of chronologically arranged artifacts like clay, ornaments, toys, seals, tools, etc.

Sirhind Canal, Rupnagar tourist places

Sirhind Canal is a support to the people for agriculture and drinking purpose. Blue and Green water flow makes this canal more beautiful and scenic. Takhat Sri Keshgarh Sahib, Rupnagar tourist places

The most significant of the complex of shrines at Anandpur Sahib is Gurudwara Keshgarh Sahib, which stands on the place where the “Khalsa” was born. It is regarded as one of the five holy “Takhats” or seats of the Sikh religion. It is on the main Rupnagar-Nangal road and one has to walk up a paved path to reach the shrine, built on the hillock. While climbing up some steps Darshani Deorhi has to be crossed first. Then comes the large open marbled square at the end of which steps lead up to the central shrine. In the center of the hall is a room displaying twelve weapons used by Guru Gobind Singh in battle. There is a magnificent dome in the hall with a golden Kalas on the top. A big serial of about 200 rooms is also attached.

Gurudwara Parivar Vichhora Sahib(Parivar Vichhora) , Rupnagar tourist places

At a distance of 15 km from Nangal Sirsa village, Gurudwara Parivar Vichhora Sahib is situated with the remembrance of  SHRI GURU GOBIND SINGH JI, at a distance of about 14 Km from Rupnagar. It has a lofty climb of 84 steps leading up to the top. It is the place where Guru was separated from his family and then preceded towards Kotla Nihang along with his two elder sons and 40 followers. The construction of the gurudwara was started in 1963 and completed in 1975. It offers a great scenic view around that place and visitors feel the peaceful environment. A big fair continuing for three days is held here every year in the month of December.

Gurudwara Bhatta Sahib, Rupnagar tourist places

Gurudwara Bhatta Sahib is located in the village Kotla Nihang, at the border of Rupnagar town. It was built in the reminiscence of Guru Gobind Singh. After departure Anandpur Sahib, Guruji asked for a place to stay, the laborers working at the Bhatta – Kiln pointed towards the burning `Kiln’. Ignorant laborers did not realize whom they were talking to. As soon as the horse of Guru stride on the flaming kiln it became cold. By the touch of the hoof of Guru’s horse, the red hot brick kiln (Bhatta) immediately cooled down.

The Pathans hearing of this miracle called and invited the Guru to their house. Baba Jiwan Singh built the Gurudwara at the site of the kiln in 1914. A fair is held here on 11th August on the death anniversary of Baba Jiwan Singh. Besides, a fair is held here on 2 to 4 December when a large number of visitors visit this place. It is a religious place and is set in a peaceful and far from the city location. It is able to be seen from the garden across the canal and right away gives you a feeling of calmness and holiness.

Gurudwara Sadabarat, Rupnagar tourist places

Gurdwara Sadabarat is situated on Nangal Road. It is said to have been built in 1930. The place where now Gurudwara Sada Barat stands was an important halting place for the merchants and other travelers coming from and going to hilly areas. It is said that even Guru Nanak Dev stayed at this place while returning from Kiratpur Sahib after meeting Baba Budden Shah there. Later on, Guru Hargobind halted at this place while proceeding from Kartarpur to Kiratpur Sahib.

Thereafter, Guru Har Rai and Guru Har Kishan, Guru Tegh Bahadur, and Guru Gobind Singh also frequently visited the place. Keeping in view the importance of the place, Raja Bhup Singh, the ruler of Ropar started LANGAR (Community Kitchen) which was server day and night to the visitors, and as such, this place came to be known as Gurudwara Sada Barat. The raised platform from where Raja Bhup Singh himself used to serve food to the people still exists. A big festival is held here annually on the occasion of Lohri-Maghi in the month of January.

Jateshwar Mahadev Temple, Rupnagar tourist places

It is traditionally popular as Shiv Mandir, the antique temple of Jateshwar Mahadev is located in the village Jatwahr that is about 6 km from village Bains on the Rupnagar-Nurpur Bedi road. The antiquity of the temple according to local custom goes back to the remote earlier period. One Jai Dayal Sharma, a resident of the village Takhatgarh, built it. There is a clear indication of a former temple at the site, in the remains, four engraved pillars of sandstone can be recognized to about the 10th-11th century. There is also a mound near the temple, which seems to belong to the medieval period.

The temple is held in great reverence and is visited by devotees from various parts of Punjab and also from the adjoining states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. July to August consider as the best time to visit and a number of visitors come to see the fair and festivals. Besides a fair is held every year on Shivratri in the month of February.

Bhakra Nangal Dam, Rupnagar tourist places

Bhakra Dam, which is located at a distance of 10 km from Nangal, is one of the highest straight gravity concrete dams in the world. Bhakra Dam is one of the biggest and first dams of India and the second largest dams in Asia. The formation of the dam started in November 1955. On its opposite is formed a beautiful lake ‘Gobind Sagar’ named after Guru Gobind Singh. It is 96 km in length with a storage capacity of 7.8 million-acre feet of water.

This dam is fully made by the use of concrete. There are two sides of the dam, one side is full of the water of the river Satluj and the other side is connecting the canals used for irrigation purposes and the hydropower plant for the production of electricity and which is capable of producing a total of 1050 MW of electricity. Water sports and activities in Gobind Sagar have been added to make it a good tourist spot. An initiative by the government of India and Punjab to produce electricity for people and Cafeteria is available to have good food at very affordable prices.

Sri Chamkaur Sahib, Rupnagar tourist places

Sri Chamkaur Sahib is situated on the banks of Sirhind Canal at a distance of 15 km from Morinda and 16 km from Rupnagar. Guru Gobind Singh and his two elder sons and 40 followers came to this place from Kotla Nihang with his pursuers close on his heels. There are several Gurudwaras at this place marking the visits and halts of Guru Gobind Singh. Gurudwara Katalgarh Sahib is also known as Gurudwara Shahidganj. It occupies a unique place among all the Gurudwaras situated at Chamkaur Sahib. It is constructed at the site where Baba Ajit Singh and Baba Jhujhar Singh, elder sons of Guru along with his 37 followers fell fighting against the Mughal Army.

Kiratpur Sahib, Rupnagar tourist places

Situated on the bank of river Sutlej, Kiratpur Sahib is at a distance of about 10 km from Anandpur Sahib towards the south, on the Nangal-Rupnagar-Chandigarh road. It is sacred to the Sikhs and they immerse the ashes of their dead at this place. It has a long association with most of the Sikh Gurus. There are several Gurudwara at this place like Gurudwara Charan Kamal, Gurudwara Baba Gurditta, Tomb of Baba Budden Shah, Gurudwara Bavangarh, Gurudwara Pata Puri, and Gurudwara Shish Mahal.

Morinda, Rupnagar tourist places

Morinda is situated on the state highway connecting Chandigarh and Ludhiana and also on Sirhind -Nangal Railway line. It is a distance of about 25 KMs from the district headquarters and 30 km from Chandigarh. Morinda is an old town, which is believed to trace its name from Mor Jats. With the lapse of time, it came to be known as Moran and then Morinda. It is also known as Baganwala (the place of Gardens), because of numerous gardens of mango trees in the area. Even though the mango growers have largely disappeared, many people of this area continue to call it Baganwala.

In the middle of the town center is an ancient gum bad believed to be of the time of Aurangzeb. This is built of small bricks and has gates on all sides. Gurudwara Shahid Ganj in Morinda was built in the memory of Baba Fateh Singh and Baba Zorawar Singh, the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh. The first co-operative Sugar Mill was also set up at Morinda to consume the sugarcane, which is a major crop of the area.

Nangal, Rupnagar tourist places

Nangal is at a distance of 60 km from Rupnagar, situated at the feet of the Shiwalik Hills. With its natural landscape of hills, rivers, and canals, Nangal is an important tourist attraction. Divided into Nangal Township and Naya Nangal, the place gained importance with the construction of the Bhakra Dam on the Satluj river in November 1955. The Bhakra Project which covers (apart from Bhakra Dam), the Nangal Dam, Nangal Hydel Channel, Ganguwal, and Kotla Power Houses have subsidized majorly the town’s inflation. Except the Nangal like, Gurudwara Vibhor Sahib present at a distance of 5 km from Nangal.
