The Lohgarh fort is one of the many mountain kilos of Maharashtra. This hilly area is located near Lonavala and 52 km away in the northern part of Pune. The Lohgarh fort is built at an altitude of about 1033 m (3389 ft) above sea level. This fort is connected with its neighboring Visapur Fort. Most of the time this fort remained with the Maratha Empire, but only for 5 years this fort remained with the Mughals. The history of Lohgarh is quite deep, different kingdoms ruled it at different times. These mainly include Satavahanas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Chalukyas, Nizams, Bahmins, Mughals and Marathas. Shivaji Maharaj captured it in 1648 CE but due to the Treaty of Purandar in 1665 CE, Shivaji Maharaj had to hand over this fort to the Mughal Empire. Shivaji Maharaj re-incorporated this fort into the Maratha Empire in 1670 CE and used this fort to keep his treasures. This fort was also used to keep the looted goods from Surat in the Maratha Empire. Later in Peshwa times Nana Fadnavis used it for some time and also built huge tanks and stairs inside the fort. Presently this fort is being protected by the Government of India.

This magnificent fort was built by the Satavahanas but was captured by Shivaji Maharaj in 1657.
