Namchi is a peaceful and beautiful hill station located in the northeastern state of Sikkim, India, which provides all the facilities to the tourists visiting here.

Based on its special geographical structure, the site welcomes all types of tourists.

Namchi is a hill station located at an elevation of about 4314 meters above sea level.

Namchi is called ‘Sky High’ in the local language (Sikkami). Situated just 92 km from the capital city of Gangtok,

this hilly destination offers an amazing view of Kanchenjunga.

In terms of folk culture, this place is an important center of the state, where you will also get a glimpse of Nepali culture.

This is an ideal place during summer where you can plan with your family or friends.

Lachen is a small quiet town located in North Sikkim district.

Its name means Bada Pass and recently due to the development of Sikkim Government as a tourist center,

it is becoming a very popular tourist destination.

Lachen is attractive to almost all tourists due to the natural beauty and variety of wildlife animals.

Lachen is situated at an altitude of 2750 m, about 129 km from Gangtok.

It serves as the base for Gurudongmar Lake and Chopta Valley.

In many parts of North Sikkim, along with the culture Lachen, the traditional administrative system has been adopted for compliance with rules and laws, called Zumsa.

In this self-government, there is a head of the entire community called Pippon and he is the one who is democratically authorized to resolve all disputes.

A unique yoke race called Thangu is also held annually in Lachen.

Lachen has a very small population. Together, it reaches around 1000.

Tourist places in and around Lachen are Gurudongmar Lake and Thangu Lachen.

Best time to visit Lachen The best time to visit Sikkim is between November to June. The weather is pleasant during this time.

Thangu is a small, old and beautiful town north of Lachen.

The place is located at an altitude of 13,500 feet above sea level, two hours from Lachen.

Thangue is the place where tourists stop for a while before traveling to interesting destinations like Gurdongmar Lake and Teesta River water source – Chho Lhamu.

The popularity of this place among tourists is gradually increasing.

Gurudongmar Lake is located at an altitude of about 5430 meters in Lachen, Sikkim.

This lake is situated to the northeast of Kanchenjunga Parvatmala.

It is only 5 kilometers from the border of China.

The lake is completely frozen in the months of November to May. A stream comes out of this lake which connects Tsho Lamo lake to this lake and then the river Teesta originates from here.

Religiously, this lake is a sacred place of both Buddhism and Sikhism.

It is said that when Guru Padmasambhava was traveling to Tibet, he chose this lake as the most suitable place for his worship.

As this lake remains frozen for most of the year, people were not able to get drinking water.

People urged Guru Padmasambhava to remove their problem. Guru Padmasambhava placed his hands on a part of the lake to help them,

after which the water of that part never freezes. Except that part, the rest of the lake remains frozen.

Chomalu Lake, North Sikkim tourist places

Songmo or Changu Lake is located in East Sikkim, about 40 km ahead of Gangtok.

The beautiful lake is glacier, glacial, situated at an altitude of 3780 meters above sea level.

This lake falls on the way to Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.

The Chinese border crossing is just 5 kilometers from this ancient lake. There is a specialty about this lake.

In 2006, the Indian Postal Service issued a stamp dedicated to the lake.

Yamthung Valley, North Sikkim tourist places

Yumthang Valley is located in North Sikkim district at an elevation of 3575 meters above sea level.

This place is 148 km from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. The Shingba Rhododendran (Buransh) Sanctuary located here has 24 varieties of Buransh flowers.

The sanctuary is littered with flowers from April to the end of May.

The hot water spring located on the right side of Yumthang is another tourist attraction.

This place is also famous for its natural beauty with lush green grasslands, cool pine trees and silver shining deodar forests, beautiful waterfalls and rivers.

Skimming is quite popular as an adventure activity in Yumthang.

Apart from this, there is a Shiva temple 6 km north of Yumthang. And Yume-Semdong is another popular place located 16 km from it.

Zero Point, North Sikkim tourist places

Zero Point Sikkim Situated  uphill at a distance of 32 kms in a zone devoid of trees, at an altitude of about 16,000 feet is Yumesamdong or Zero Point.

Tourists drive here to experience snow which is best in November-December and February March.

Yumesamdong is very close to the Chinese border. It is generally covered by snow. 

One gets to see beautiful snow peaks on a clear day. In spring the place smells of a local plant named Ezila, which is used to make incense.

Also in spring Yaks are seen grazing around.
Note : Car Drivers usually charge extra for going to Yumesamdong and one should fix the terms and conditions, before fixing up with a travel agent specially if going in shared jeep.
Note : Gangtok is Center location for North, South, West and East Sikkim.

How to reach North Sikkim

North Sikkim By Air:

Bagdogra, West Bengal(IXB) is the nearest airport, located  at distance of 124 km. One can book Bus,Share Taxi or Cab to reach their Gangtok. Pakyong Airport, Pakyong is also nearest but it is not recommende because frequent flight not available and some time flight also cancelled as per weather.

North Sikkim By Train:

New Jalpaiguri (NJP)  is well connected and located 117km away. Regular trains run on all the major routes and cover cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata etc. Bus, Cabs, Share taxis and public transport can be used to reach Gangtok, it takes 3-4 hours.

North Sikkim By Bus:

Gangtok Bus Stand is well-connected to other major cities across India like Siliguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kolkata . You can avail either state-owned government buses or private buses, depending on your budget and can book online and offline both.

North Sikkim Self Drive:

Car is the best option as you can explore more and as their own choice. Siliguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kolkata  and other neighboring cities of Gangtok are the best route to roam Gangtok.

Lachen and Lachung located centrally. You can easily get good hotels or home stay. It cost under 2000-3000/- Per Night, depends on Pick and Off seasons.

Best Time To Visit in North Sikkim

It is among one of the best place where visitors visit through-out the year except December to February. However, the best time to visit North Sikkim is in Summer months from March to June. The average temperature ranging from 4°C to 20°C, making it an ideal for sightseeing and other outdoor activities. The Winter is very cold and some of the area is closed, it is not advisible. Monsoon is also make hectic due to land slide and rain so better to avoid in this season.
