About Warangal

Warangal is known for its monumental beauty only because of the fact that years ago the Kakatiyas has contributed by leaps and bounds in the overall development of Warangal. Yes, Kakatiyas were the ones who created huge irrigation projects. Kakatiya’s mainly existed from 14th to 17th century, but still the figures are not accurate.

When coming to some of the magnificent temples of Warangal which were built during the Kakatiya regime, the Kakatiyas has used extensively grey granites, dolerites and sandstones in the construction of temples. As per the historical studies, dolerite rocks were used to construct some parts of thousand pillar temple and similarly sandstones were used to construct Ramappa Temple. Both these temples are located in Warangal and are considered to be the treasures of Warangal.

Both Ramappa Lake and Ramappa temple are the core tourist attractions. The beauty and environment of both are simply awesome. The enormous water of Ramappa lake combined with the overall scenic beauty of the place is just too good, as experienced by the many tourists who have visited this wonderful Ramappa lake.

Coming to Ramappa temple, no doubt the temple has its own highpoints, but an astonishing fact about this temple is that this temple has got floating bricks which were discovered centuries ago. This temple is located 80Kms from Warangal district.

Another great tourist spot is the Warangal Fort. This is locally known as ‘Orugallu kota’ or ‘Khila Warangal’ and is located just 4Kms East of Warangal city. Warangal fort again dates back to Kakatiya regime, and is known for its archaeological richness. The Kakatiya rulers extensively used the Kakatiya fort for various activities.

Exploration of Warangal Fort

To bring out a detailed picture of Warangal fort, the archaeological survey of India has recently conducted extensive explorations to identify the stages of development of this wonderful Warangal Fort. The early stage of the constructional activity of the fort was initiated in the Pre-Kakatiyan times i.e., Rastrakuta rule.

The second stage goes back during the regime of Kakatiyan dynasty which includes mud protection, construction of temples like Nelasambhuni Gudi, L.P Gandi Temple. The third stage was quiet a good one, as in this advanced stage the Warangal fort had many achievements some of which were art, architecture and economy.

Another wonderful temple in Warangal which is highly revered and popular is the Thousand Pillar Temple. This temple also known as Rudresvara temple consists of a triple shrine complex, Nandimandapa and a Kalyanmandapa built one after other scaling from north to south. Now in the present times, there is a huge compound wall built around the temple, and serves as the prakara leaving a rectangular courtyard.

The Thousand Pillar Temple is a good example of the balanced treatment between architectural members and sculptural art.The central four pillars of Mukhamandapa, Dwaratoranas in front of Antarala and Garbhagrihas and central ceiling lab of the Mukhamandapa are a class by themselves.

The lotus medallions on the Bharapattas are very impressive and prominent. The triangular sections of the Ashtakona design of the central ceiling are decorated each with a Kirtimukha surrounded by freely carved arabesque. The representation of Siva-Nataraja and Ashtadikpalakas on their mounts on the central square of this navel is the best example of the plastic art of the Kakatiyas.

Though there is no formal date for the foundation of Warangal, but some of the best historians has come to a viewpoint that it was founded between the years 1199-1262. Again, these figures are not accurate and are calculated from a historian’s viewpoint. It was believed that in the early sixteenth century a local Hindu chief by the name of Sitapati was considered to be the governor of Warangal.

In 1510 Sitapati was overpowered by the vijayanagara forces, who then took over the control of the city. Later on after two to three decades Warangal city was dominated by the Nizams. Though Warangal passed back and forth between Hindus and Muslims for more than three hundred years, the city never lost its role as an important military outpost.
