Harike Waterland came into existence in 1952 after the construction of a barrage near the confluence of the Sutlej and Beas rivers. Maharaja Ranjit Singh ji ruled from Lahore. It is said that whenever he returned to his capital after traveling to Amritsar (a distance of about 30 km from today’s roads), he would stop for the night in a village near the present India-Pakistan border. A dancer-courtier (Kanjari) named Mora used to entertain her and her companions. On one occasion, she woke up late, waiting for the Maharaja. When he asks why he is late, he tells him that his silver anklet has fallen into the stream and he has spent time on it.

The king ordered a new bridge (pulse) to be made easy for the woman to cross from her village. That’s how “Pul Kanjari” came into existence- at least, that’s the story. Today, the old bridge is not located. And there are some old brick structures and the surrounding area has a temple, gurdwara, and mosque.

It is believed that Shri Ram Tirtha Temple is the ancient ashram of sage Valmiki. This temple dedicated to Lord Rama is 11 km from Amritsar.
